FESTIVAL FOREWORD

Welcome to Photomonth 2012

Photomonth is a serious demonstration of the depth and diversity of contemporary photography, of accessibility and inclusivity. Exhibitions are self-curated, self-motivated, self-determined. Photomonth is not a fringe, it is a festival. Each show has its own special value, making a clear contribution to the art form that is photography.

Photomonth provides a real focus for photography in the East End of London, an area often blighted by poverty, politicians and planners, but that always survives through the imagination of the people. There is a ‘Radical London’ theme flowing through photomonth this year. East London has a proud history of activism, of protesting against injustice, inequality and racism, of rising up in favour of a fairer society and seeking to improve the lives of ordinary people. There is a series of talks and an exhibition on this theme at the Bishopsgate Institute, with more shows during the festival about protest and environmental damage.

Photomonth opens at Oxford House celebrating its status as an international photography festival with the ‘1Day6Cities’ exhibition featuring images taken on the same day in six different cities around the world. During October and November there will be a huge range of exhibitions and events to enjoy. There is something for everyone and everyone is welcome.

We would like to express our thanks to the Bishopsgate Institute, Rich Mix, V&A Museum of Childhood, Barbican Art Gallery, Doomed Gallery Dalston, Uncertain States and the Kahaila Café for their extensive programmes in support of photomonth and all the photographers, galleries and venues that make photomonth east london the largest photography festival in the UK.
